Call for fair treatment and protection for incarcerated people affected by COVID-19
Sign our petition calling on the Dallas County Felony and Misdemeanor Criminal Judges, Sheriff Marian Brown, Dallas County Commissioners, and District Attorney John Creuzot to act now to protect all of us -- our incarcerated loved ones, and those who work in courts, jails, and prisons, as well as our entire community. As a multi-faith coalition, we believe that God is on the side of the oppressed, the vulnerable, and the forgotten. If we are to stand with God we must stand with them. For this reason we urge the county to respond to the needs of the people being held in the county jail - those who, because of their confinement, are especially vulnerable to a deadly COVID-19 outbreak.
Prisons and jails do not solve public crises but instead produce and exaggerate them. Incarcerated populations don't have the luxury of "social distancing" to protect their health. A context where healthcare is deficient, housing conditions are squalid, and individual needs are neglected is a recipe for the rapid spread of disease. Correction officer contact and other personnel could facilitate community spread throughout the jail.
As formerly incarcerated people ourselves, and those who are leading grassroots work with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated populations, we have worked in a coalition with other Dallas grassroots organizers and faith leaders to create a platform for Dallas County’s response to COVID-19. To protect people who are incarcerated, their families, and our communities, the safest and most effective way to respond to this crisis is:
The needs of the present health crisis demonstrate what should have been clear all along: prisons and jails are a threat to public health and safety. In order to make our communities safe and whole we must divest from cages and invest in care for one another. We need each other. We are in this together.
